83 schools across NJ recognized as sustainability leaders with certification from Sustainable Jersey for Schools
At their August 22nd meeting, the SOMSD Board of Education approved the appointment of 4 new administrators: MMS Principal, Fine Arts Supervisor, Special Education Supervisor, & Youth Development & Pupil Services Supervisor.
Seth Boyden Elementary School has bid a warm farewell to its principal of ten years, Mark Quiles. The school now welcomes new principal Damion Frye, who was most recently Special Assistant to the Assistant Superintendent of the Newark public school system.

Columbia High School’s production of Beauty & the Beast has been nominated for 10 Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Stars Awards.
CHS Senior Steevens Delices was recognized during Senior Recognition Night with the Math Department’s Edison Award.
During the 7th grade Social Studies unit on sustainability, students were asked to explore the concept of population growth and its impact on water supply, forests and public health.
Approximately 900 students from more than 60 schools and school districts throughout New Jersey came together to recite authentic poems they had memorized in Chinese, ESL, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, and Spanish.
Jefferson Team LOLA Students along with their parents dedicated their May 27th day off from school to the children at Cerebral Palsy School of New Jersey to celebrate their Wheelin’ and Walkin’ yearly event.

Columbia High School's student newspaper, The Columbian, has won the first place award for the second year in a row in the national competition held by the American Scholastic Press Association.
Columbia High School participated in the North Jersey School Music Association’s annual Concert Band Festival
Ibithaj Muhammad of Maplewood is one of TIME magazine's 2016 "The 100 Most Influential People."
The month long celebration culminated with student artwork decorating the hallways and a school wide assembly.
We will be working on schedule changes during the week of August 29th. Please utilize the connected form for all changes. Requests for changes should be made if:
1. a core content course is missing from a schedule
2. a duplicate course is present in the schedule (a course that the student has already taken and passed).
3. required elective coursework for graduation in the state of NJ is missing from a schedule.
4. the student has been assigned to an academic level other than was selected in spring 2016.
FLES is an after school opportunity for elementary students to be introduced to the different foreign languages taught in our district. The program is coordinated by SOMSD World Language teachers and led by high achieving, CHS students.
