Long Range Facilities Plan
About LRFP
The District’s Long Range Facilities Plan (LRFP) received preliminary approval from the Board of Education on November 19, 2018. The repairs, renovation, and new construction work of the Long Range Facilities Plan will address the health and safety issues in our facilities and expand our capacity to meet growing enrollment. The first bond sale closed during the summer of 2019; since this time, architects have been working on architectural designs for District facilities. During this time, numerous meetings were held during the school year to finalize designs. On June 22, 2020, the Board of Education authorized the administration to send the elementary school designs for code review. Code review is a process where building code officials examine the designs to ensure they follow all building codes. Once code review is completed the projects will be advertised for bid and contracts awarded.
The District submitted six elementary school construction plans to the state for approval and received approvals for four locations in March 2021. Approvals to bid additions and renovations were received for Clinton, Jefferson, Seth Boyden, and Tuscan elementary schools. On March 11, construction bids were advertised for Clinton Elementary and Jefferson Elementary schools. Subsequent bids for the remaining two schools will be advertised in the coming weeks. Construction plans for Marshall, South Mountain Elementary and South Mountain Annex are still in the approval process.
The work being undertaken through the Long Range Facilities Plan (LRFP) initiative while a separate track supports the work and decisions that will be made concerning the SOMSD Intentional Integration Initiative. See more information and presentations below:

Uvalde School Tragedy: Message from Superintendent Taylor
Good Morning South Orange & Maplewood School District Community,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you this morning. The senseless act of violence that occurred yesterday at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX stole the lives of 19 students and I believe we all woke up this morning feeling more burdened and saddened at yet another school tragedy inflicted by gun violence. Please know this morning resources and talking scripts were shared with our staff members so that they are able to help students process this tragedy. In addition our school social workers and counselors are on hand to offer support to students and staff who are struggling today and will be available to offer support in the coming days.
As a District, we want to assure families that the safety and security of our students and school facilities is always our top priority. We continue to work in partnership with our Board of Education and local police departments to improve our safety practices and protocols. Below is a list of resources that may help aid you in how to speak and support children in the aftermath of school violence.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s School Counselor or Principal if you feel further assistance is needed. Thank you.
Dr. Ronald G. Taylor, Superintendent of Schools
IMPORTANT SOMSD COMMUNITY UPDATE: High Transmission Essex County CALI Score Leads to Increased Quarantine Period for Unvaccinated Individuals
IMPORTANT UPDATE
December 9, 2021
Spanish Translation: bit.ly/3lQvAkz | Haitian Creole Translation: bit.ly/3IBzFCL
Good Evening SOMSD Community & Staff:
Please read this important update as received from the South Orange and Maplewood Departments of Health this afternoon:
“The weekly COVID Activity Level Index (CALI) report for the state of NJ was recently released. The entire state is now considered as HIGH transmission. Therefore, we are reverting back to a 14-day quarantine for those who are unvaccinated and exposed while we are considered as countywide high transmission as per NJDOH. During a 14-day quarantine, unvaccinated individuals may NOT test out of quarantine.”
What this means for UNVACCINATED District students/staff:
- As per the new guidelines any unvaccinated District student or staff person who is exposed to COVID-19 must now quarantine for 14 full days (Note: Providing a negative COVID test result during quarantine will not allow the unvaccinated staff/student to return to school facilities. The individual must complete the full 14-day quarantine period).
- During a student’s quarantine period, they will receive virtual instruction. Please note while we will strive to minimize the disruption to student learning during the quarantine period by having systems in place for students to receive virtual instructional support, these structures will vary depending on the circumstances.
We are asking the SOMSD community members to renew their pandemic diligence by continuing to wear masks, practicing physical distancing, hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, staying home when sick, and getting tested if symptomatic.
For more information/details, view the NJ Regional COVID Activity Report: https://www.nj.gov/health/cd/statistics/covid/
The District is continuing to update the Fall 2021 Return to School Guidebook [https://bit.ly/SOMSDFallGuidebook] as information is received at the federal, state, and local levels.
We highly promote vaccination of all individuals ages 5 and up and thank you for your continued commitment to stopping the spread of COVID-19 and helping us care for your children and the SOMSD community.
Sincerely,
South Orange & Maplewood School District
