Raquel Y. Horn is the Principal of Marshall Elementary School. She previously served as Assistant Principal at Seth Boyden Demonstration School for nine years and as Assistant Principal at the Delran Intermediate School in Burlington County, NJ. She began her career in education in the Plainfield Public School District where she taught second and third grades and also worked as a Literacy Coordinator. She was recognized for her work as a teacher at Evergreen School when she was selected as Teacher of the Year in 2004 and received the prestigious Governor’s Teacher Award.
Prior to entering education, Mrs. Horn worked for nearly 10 years in the Newark Area Office as a Federal Investigator for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) where she investigated allegations of workplace discrimination. She was acknowledged in 1994 by then Chairman of the EEOC Gilbert Casellas and received an award for Outstanding Investigator. Her experience at the EEOC has helped to shape her as an administrator who values students, staff, and families of all backgrounds. As such, is it important to note that Mrs. Horn is “SEED trained” (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) and is committed to creating an environment that is gender fair, multiculturally equitable, socioeconomically aware, and globally informed. She believes that all children can learn if the curriculum is rigorous, if instruction is engaging, and if students are taught by teachers who have high expectations and make topics culturally relevant to them.
Initially an engineering major, Mrs. Horn holds a B.A. in Communications and a M.A. in Educational Leadership and Supervision. In additional to a wide variety of academic organizations, she is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a Lifetime Associate in Jack and Jill of America, Inc. She and her husband have two children in college.
