Schools across the country celebrate Walk to School Day during the month of October. How does a school with a large percentage of bus students participate in this day? We have a walkathon, of course! The PTA planned a walkathon on the grounds of Marshall School on the morning of October 10th. Students participated by grade level in one of three 30 minute walking sessions. While a DJ spun popular dance tunes, the students walked and were prompted to do so sideways, to skip, and to walk like zombies. The latter was especially fun when done to Michael Jackson’s Thriller and to the theme from Ghostusters! The children did the “cha-cha-slide” and the chicken dance and other fun routines. Parents were on hand to mark students’ cards each time they completed a lap. Students received pledges from family and friends in advance and money raised will support the Marshall School PTA and the work it does to aid the students and school. In all, about 30 parents volunteered to make this event a success. The children loved the activity and many mentioned that they were looking forward to next year when they could do it again. In addition to raising funds, children had the opportunity to move and exercise in the fresh air! Teachers and administrators also participated. It was a fun time for all involved.
