Civil Discourse Takes Center Stage in the Parnassian Society’s 12 Angry Men from November 21-24

November 18, 2024 By Communications

SOMSD strives daily to celebrate our staff and students.
by Audrey Noguera, Columbia High School Class of 2025 President

With biting social commentary, humor, and suspense, the Columbia High School (CHS) Parnassian Society’s production of 12 Angry Men explores the danger of deep-seated prejudices and the power of civil discourse. Innovatively staged in the CHS Black Box Theater, the production breathes new life into this American classic, challenging audience members to take stock of their biases and reflect on the political polarization gripping our modern world.

Under the direction of James Dyer, George Rem Johannsen, and Kelly Murphy, the production explores the tense deliberation of a jury tasked with deciding the fate of a defendant accused of murder. “When we look at the American incarceration system and the political climate at the moment, we very much live in a world that still perpetuates this idea of fake news,” Dyer said. “So how to actually approach information is important, and I think that makes this play still deeply relevant.”

Set up in a unique traverse design, audience members sit on both sides of the stage, forcing viewers to confront the act of judgment––not just of the characters, but of one another. “The audience will be looking at each other from across the stage,” Dyer said. “We like the idea of us actively holding each other accountable in equal measure, in the same way that we expect the jurors and defendant to be accountable.”

Stella Boucher ‘28, playing Juror 4, said that “this show, especially now, is very impactful and still true, even if we don’t want to admit all the stereotypes that get brought up and all the hurtful things that are said in the show, they’re all very realistic.”

Since its founding in 1895, the Parnassian Society has remained a cornerstone of the CHS arts community, and 12 Angry Men continues the society’s tradition of presenting thought-provoking work that confronts complex societal themes. “I have really loved being a part of that tradition and getting to pass it on,” said cast member Hayden Groner ‘25, playing Juror 3. “All the shows have really challenged not only the cast, but the audience as well as the directors, to sit with a piece and work through it, step by step, which can be uncomfortable but also rewarding.”

Under Dyer and Johannsen’s direction, students have had the opportunity to explore the theater world and learn from each other in an open and supportive space. Stage Manager Soph Irfani ‘25, emphasized the unique learning environment the Parnassian Society provides students. “We are teaching people how to do theater things, and I am learning as I go,” they said. “It’s a great space to grow.” Boucher agreed, calling the community “so welcoming that it warms your heart.” Nuela Obasi ‘28, agreed, saying, “I feel like we just kind of bonded instantly,” she said.

Don’t miss this timely, thought-provoking production that makes you a part of the action and keeps you on the edge of your seat. 12 Angry Men is set to appear at the CHS Black Box theater on November 21, 22, and 23 at 7:30 pm and on November 24th at 6 pm. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at cur8.com/projects/columbia.

South Orange & Maplewood Schools Earn Designation in State Review

November 5, 2024 By Communications

SOMSD strives daily to celebrate our staff and students.
New Jersey Department of Education recognizes the Essex County school district’s commitment to excellence across critical areas.

The South Orange & Maplewood School District has achieved a “high performing” status in a recent New Jersey Department of Education evaluation.

Under state regulations, districts in the state must undergo the New Jersey Quality Single Accountability Continuum (NJQSAC) review every three years, where the Essex County Executive County Superintendent and state educational officials verify the district’s compliance across five key areas: Instruction and Program, Fiscal Management, Governance, Operations, and Personnel.

According to the NJDOE’s Division of Field Support and Services, the South Orange & Maplewood district achieved exceptional results, meeting or exceeding at least 80% of the weighted indicators in each of the five NJQSAC areas evaluated resulting in a designation of “high performing.”

Based on the results of the District Performance Review (DPR), the Commissioner of Education will recommend to the State Board of Education that the South Orange & Maplewood district be certified as providing a thorough and efficient system of education for the next three years.

“This ‘high performing’ designation reaffirms the South Orange & Maplewood School District’s dedication to our students and communities,” said Superintendent of Schools Jason Bing. “Our educators, staff, administrators, Board, and families have worked tirelessly to create an environment where all students can succeed. I am excited to build on this strong foundation and find new ways to elevate the learning experiences of every student in our district.”

New Jersey’s Quality Single Accountability Continuum is the state’s approach to evaluating its public school districts, focusing on functionality in providing districts with assistance and resources to improve performance continually. By evaluating critical components in New Jersey’s school systems, QSAC builds the capacity of local schools to deliver high-quality education for all students rather than just meet minimum standards.

The district’s Board of Education will formally present the QSAC results at their next public meeting on November 21st, with thorough details on how the district did well in categories of the QSAC rubric.

District Encourages Educators to Apply for Open Roles

October 19, 2024 By Communications

SOMSD strives daily to celebrate our staff and students.
Career opportunities and community support extended to teachers affected by staff cuts in New Jersey.

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ —Amid the unexpected reduction in staff across many school systems in New Jersey, the South Orange & Maplewood School District (SOMSD) seeks to provide support and career opportunities for affected educators, helping to ensure stability during this challenging time.

“At moments like these, we understand how unsettling it can be for educators who have dedicated themselves to their students and schools,” said Human Resources Director Tunde Adedoyin. “Our goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible and reassure everyone that there are new opportunities ahead.”

South Orange & Maplewood School District Has Positions That Need to be Filled

The South Orange & Maplewood School District (SOMSD) is strategically addressing staffing needs by offering open positions across various categories, providing key opportunities for educators impacted by the East Orange layoffs. Among the available roles are positions in elementary education, such as Preschool Relief Teacher and Special Education Teacher at multiple grade levels. The district is also seeking high school educators, with openings like Teacher of Math, Teacher of Biology, and Teacher of Spanish, alongside several leave replacement roles, ensuring continuity in crucial subject areas.

In addition to teaching positions, SOMSD is hiring for pivotal support roles such as Preschool Fiscal Specialist, and Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA). These roles highlight the district’s commitment to enhancing both instructional quality and administrative operations. Educators seeking new opportunities will find a supportive environment, and SOMSD encourages all qualified applicants to explore these openings as part of a collaborative effort to address both immediate and long-term staffing needs.

These roles offer a potential new home for educators facing unexpected career uncertainty. SOMSD encourages impacted teachers and staff to:

  • Explore available positions on the district’s website
  • Submit applications and updated resumes for consideration
  • Contact the Human Resources department to discuss their qualifications and how their experience could fit within the district

“We want to be as helpful as possible,” Adedoyin continued. “We know this news has shocked many, and we are here to assist in finding a place where their skills and dedication can continue to make a difference.”

In addition to SOMSD, other school districts in Bergen, Essex, and Union counties are also offering job opportunities. These districts have come together to provide options for educators who are suddenly facing the challenge of seeking new employment.

“We understand that our neighbors in East Orange are dealing with real challenges, and we are working alongside other districts to ensure these educators do not have to face this alone,” added Adedoyin. “We are confident that, together, we can help find the right fit for many of them.”

As December approaches, SOMSD is committed to not only offering job opportunities but also providing a sense of community and support. Educators from East Orange are encouraged to reach out to inquire about open positions and seek any guidance they may need during this transition. The district hopes to welcome many of these talented professionals and values the experience and passion they bring.

For more information or to explore available positions, impacted educators are encouraged to visit SOMSD’s website or contact the Human Resources Department directly.

District Schools Focus on a Culture of Respect in October

October 18, 2024 By Communications

SOMSD strives daily to celebrate our staff and students.
The school district’s proactive approach to fostering empathy, kindness, and inclusivity during October helps students build stronger friendships and navigate the challenging world with compassion.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — In South Orange and Maplewood, respect is not just a virtue but the foundation of the district’s educational philosophy. The Week of Respect, observed every October, is more than a celebration—it’s a living, breathing example of how the district instills empathy, kindness, and inclusivity in its students. At a time when young minds are increasingly influenced by social pressures and online conflicts, the district is championing a proactive approach to teaching the value of respect in every aspect of students’ lives.

Rather than simply recognizing the dangers of bullying or emphasizing isolated lessons, the district focuses on a holistic understanding of respect. At school, students are encouraged to explore how respect takes shape in their daily interactions, whether through their choice of words, how they handle disagreements, or how they maintain personal boundaries.

One of the week’s key lessons was the power of language. Students were introduced to the THINK acronym—Is it Thoughtful, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind?—as a simple yet profound tool for assessing the impact of their words. Students wrote messages of hope and encouragement on school sidewalks, making lasting reminders of their commitment to kindness as they passed the markings on the way to school.

Clinton Elementary School’s fifth graders left a lasting impression during the “Chalk-it-Up for Respect” event at Columbia High School to spread positivity for students arriving at school throughout the week. Equipped with sidewalk chalk, Clinton students filled the high school’s grounds with uplifting drawings and mantras that left a colorful trail of hope and encouragement.

But respect goes beyond words. South Orange and Maplewood schools also emphasize the importance of personal boundaries and self-respect. Students engaged in discussions about how to set boundaries with peers and how to respect the space and feelings of others. Though sometimes challenging, these conversations are crucial in teaching children that respect begins with understanding their own needs and extending that same consideration to others.

At South Mountain Elementary School and Delia Bolden Elementary School, the faculty’s emphasis on respect also includes fostering connection. Students were encouraged to break out of their comfort zones, engage with new classmates, and build friendships through simple conversations. These small moments of connection teach students that community is built on everyday actions and interactions.

By the end of the Week of Respect, students had not only participated in these lessons, but they had also internalized them. The week’s activities culminated with a reflection on how to make respect an ongoing practice. Students made a collective commitment, or “The Promise,” to actively create a kinder, more inclusive environment. The promise reads, in part, “I will speak up or get help instead of being a bystander. I include others in group situations. I accept others for their differences.”

The district’s ongoing commitment to respect, empathy, and kindness is helping shape a generation that values individuality and collective well-being. In South Orange and Maplewood, respect is more than an annual celebration required by the state—it’s the foundation for bringing the district’s two communities together and aspiring for a happier future together.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The South Orange and Maplewood community celebrates academic excellence at the start of the school year, with 47 Columbia High School students being recognized in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program and the College Board’s Recognition Program. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has a long-standing tradition of honoring academic excellence without government funding and offers scholarships through the support of nearly 280 national businesses, colleges, and individual donors dedicated to recognizing the nation’s brightest young minds.

Commended students were acknowledged for their exceptional academic promise, demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test for the program. In October 2023, students entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The NMSC identifies the top 50,000 highest scorers and notifies them of their high achievement.

“These students have shown an exceptional level of intelligence and determination, and working with such brilliant and motivated students is truly a privilege,” Frank Sanchez, the principal of Columbia High School said. “I also want to commend our incredible CHS faculty for mentoring, inspiring, and teaching these gifted students.”

The excitement continues at Columbia High School, as four students—Theodore Abbate, Ruby Hoffman-Werle, Henry Martin, and Oliver Nesin—have been named semifinalists in the prestigious 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These exceptional students are part of an elite group of more than 16,000 semifinalists nationwide, with the opportunity to advance in the competition and vie for scholarships in Spring 2025.

“South Orange and Maplewood educators have done an outstanding job inspiring, mentoring, and guiding students throughout their academic journey,” Superintendent Jason Bing said. “These achievements represent great collective efforts of our entire community—students, teachers, staff, and families all previously working together to foster an environment where every student can thrive. We are excited to continue supporting these scholars throughout their academic journey.”

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®), approximately 95% of semifinalists are expected to advance to finalist status, and about half of those finalists will earn the prestigious Merit Scholar® title. In total, nearly 6,870 National Merit Scholarships will be awarded, with recipients sharing $26 million in scholarships to support their educational pursuits.

These four students exemplify not only their own dedication and hard work but also the unwavering support of the educators who have guided them throughout their academic journeys.
