Estimation can be used when an exact answer is not needed. *Children use place-value and number-bond strategies such as adding 10 and subtracting extra ones and adding 100 and subtracting extra tens to help them with mental addition and subtraction. *Children also use number lines to round number to the nearest ten. *Children estimate sum and difference to check reasonableness of answers.
