Author, Brendan January, visited Team LOLA on November 19, 2015 (Gussis and Sudol). Students explored topics from the Civil War to Van Gogh to Beethoven as foundations for nonfiction writing ideas. He spoke about using the 5 w’s as a guide for your writing, but not to stop just there! He also taught the students while researching a historical figure or time period that they can connect with their subjects by trying to “live in their shoes”. Students listened to Beethoven’s music to better understand his emotions. They explored how painters identify complementary colors and express feelings in art. Students dressed as a soldier during the war by putting on heavy wool layers of clothes to feel what it would be like to live a day in the life of a soldier.
